Nutrition

Why these matter
  • Prenatal vitamin

A daily prenatal vitamin covers the gap between what a typical diet provides and what pregnancy needs, folic acid especially. Take the one your midwife or doctor recommended, ideally the same time each day.

  • Folate

Folate (folic acid) lowers the risk of neural tube defects, which form in the first weeks of pregnancy, before most people know they are pregnant. Common sources: Leafy greens, Lentils and beans, Fortified bread or cereal, Oranges, Avocado.

  • Iron

Blood volume expands substantially in pregnancy, and iron needs roughly double. Pairing iron-rich foods with vitamin C, like citrus or peppers, helps your body absorb it. Common sources: Red meat, Poultry, Beans and lentils, Spinach, Fortified cereal.

  • Calcium

Calcium builds the baby's bones and teeth; if diet falls short, the baby draws on your own stores instead. Common sources: Milk, cheese or yogurt, Fortified plant milk, Tofu, Leafy greens.

  • Choline

Choline supports the baby's brain and spinal cord development, and most prenatal vitamins contain little or none of it. Common sources: Eggs (especially the yolk), Lean meat or poultry, Fish, Cashews, Cruciferous vegetables.

  • Omega-3 (DHA)

DHA supports the baby's brain and eye development, especially in the third trimester. Common sources: Salmon or trout, Sardines, Walnuts, Chia or flax seeds, Algae-based supplement.

  • Iodine

Iodine supports the baby's brain development through thyroid hormone, and needs rise notably in pregnancy. Common sources: Dairy, Eggs, Seafood, Iodized salt.

  • Vitamin D

Vitamin D helps you and the baby absorb calcium, and few foods naturally contain much of it. Common sources: Fatty fish, Fortified milk, Egg yolks, Sunlight.

Urgent warning signs

The CDC says these are urgent warning signs, during pregnancy and in the year after. If you feel like something just isn't right, or you aren't sure if it's serious, talk to your health care provider. Be sure to tell them if you are pregnant or were pregnant within the last year. In an emergency, call 911.

  • Headache that won't go away or gets worse over time
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Changes in your vision
  • Fever of 100.4°F or higher
  • Extreme swelling of your hands or face
  • Thoughts about harming yourself or your baby
  • Trouble breathing
  • Chest pain or fast-beating heart
  • Severe nausea and throwing up
  • Severe belly pain that doesn't go away
  • Baby's movement stopping or slowing during pregnancy
  • Vaginal bleeding or fluid leaking during pregnancy
  • Severe swelling, redness, or pain of your leg or arm
  • Overwhelming tiredness

ACOG says to call your ob-gyn about any bleeding in pregnancy, and right away or go to the hospital if it's later in pregnancy. Regular contractions or fluid leaking before 37 weeks: call too.

If you're thinking of harming yourself or your baby, or in danger now, call 911 or call or text 988 right away. For support any time, the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline is 1-833-TLC-MAMA (1-833-852-6262), call or text.

Today’s read

Something new from this week, every day.

Worth knowing

Eating dates in the final weeks

Several small trials have found that eating around six dates a day from 36 weeks is associated with a more favorable cervix on admission and a lower rate of needing induction or augmentation. Dates are nutritious and safe in pregnancy regardless, so the downside is limited to the sugar content, worth discussing if you have gestational diabetes.

PromisingHow sure is this?

Some good quality research supports this, but it is not settled science.

Consistent direction across several small randomized trials, but sample sizes are small, blinding is impossible and most studies come from a handful of centers. Not yet in mainstream guidelines.

Good news

Childhood vaccines have saved an estimated 154 million lives over the past 50 years, 101 million of them babies.

For the partner

Any day now.

  • Keep your phone charged and on, and stay reachable.
  • Learn the contraction timer on the Today tab. You can time from your own phone and both of you will see it.
  • Know the birth plan well, so you can speak up for them when it counts. If it isn't filled in yet, do it together, and it's there to pull up at the hospital.

And look after yourself too. Partners can feel anxious or low in pregnancy as well, and it’s worth talking about.
