Urgent warning signs
The CDC says these are urgent warning signs, during pregnancy and in the year after. If you feel like something just isn't right, or you aren't sure if it's serious, talk to your health care provider. Be sure to tell them if you are pregnant or were pregnant within the last year. In an emergency, call 911.
- Headache that won't go away or gets worse over time
- Dizziness or fainting
- Changes in your vision
- Fever of 100.4°F or higher
- Extreme swelling of your hands or face
- Thoughts about harming yourself or your baby
- Trouble breathing
- Chest pain or fast-beating heart
- Severe nausea and throwing up
- Severe belly pain that doesn't go away
- Baby's movement stopping or slowing during pregnancy
- Vaginal bleeding or fluid leaking during pregnancy
- Severe swelling, redness, or pain of your leg or arm
- Overwhelming tiredness
ACOG says to call your ob-gyn about any bleeding in pregnancy, and right away or go to the hospital if it's later in pregnancy. Regular contractions or fluid leaking before 37 weeks: call too.
If you're thinking of harming yourself or your baby, or in danger now, call 911 or call or text 988 right away. For support any time, the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline is 1-833-TLC-MAMA (1-833-852-6262), call or text.

Question of the day
Should I hand-express and store colostrum?
Expressing colostrum before birth, from around 36 weeks, is often recommended for people with gestational diabetes, and some hospitals suggest it more widely. Ask your midwife rather than starting on your own, as it can stimulate contractions.
For the partner
The third trimester: sleep often gets harder.
- Take on the chores that involve bending, lifting or late nights.
- Check your own vaccines are up to date. Whooping cough and flu protect the baby too.
- Plan the route to the hospital or birth center, and where to park.
And look after yourself too. Partners can feel anxious or low in pregnancy as well, and it’s worth talking about.
