Birth
The line is just the numbers you typed, no percentiles, and no verdict on whether a weight is where it should be. Your pediatrician plots growth properly at checkups and is the person to ask about it.

Next checkup
Developmental and autism screening, plus growth and vaccines.
18-month checkup
Overdue: it was due around Jun 11
What happens
- Weight, length and head size, plotted on a growth chart
- A full physical exam
- Developmental screening: a standard questionnaire on how your child moves, plays, talks and learns
- Autism screening: a short standard questionnaire
- Questions about hearing, vision, lead and anemia risk
- An oral health check
- Fluoride varnish painted on the teeth (every 3 to 6 months once teeth are in)
- Questions about how your family is doing, including your own well-being
Vaccines commonly given
- Hepatitis A (2nd dose, 6 months after the 1st)
- DTaP (4th dose), if not given at 15 months
- Hepatitis B or Polio (), if still due
- Flu (yearly, in flu season)
Vaccine schedules vary, and since 2025 the American Academy of Pediatrics and CDC have published different ones. This list follows the AAP schedule and shows what's commonly given, but the exact timing and brands differ between practices. Your pediatrician will confirm what's due at each visit. RSV protection for babies depends on the season and on whether an RSV vaccine was given in pregnancy. If a dose is missed or you're behind, catch-up is possible, and the series doesn't need to start over.
Questions to ask
- What do the screening results mean for us?
- How can we help our child's talking along?
- How do we handle biting, hitting or tantrums?
- When is it time to think about potty training?
Teeth and the dentist
- Book the first dental visit by the first birthday, or within 6 months of the first tooth, whichever comes first.
- After that, a checkup about every 6 months, or as often as your dentist suggests.
- Fluoride varnish, painted on at the pediatrician's or dentist's office, helps prevent cavities from the first tooth. It's usually repeated every 3 to 6 months.
- Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste: a smear the size of a grain of rice under 3, and a pea-sized amount from 3.
- Brush last thing at night, after the last food or drink of the day.

Tired signs to watch for
Yawning, rubbing eyes or ears, staring off, going quiet, fussing, or turning away from play. Starting the wind-down when these show up often goes more smoothly than waiting for the clock.
Traditional practiceHow sure is this?
Widely practiced and generally harmless, but with little solid evidence behind it.
Awake-time ranges are widely used by parents and sleep consultants, but there's little formal research behind exact numbers. Treat this as a rough guide, follow your baby's cues, and always put them down on their back in a clear crib.
Today’s read
A myth, a question and some good news, new each day.
Mythbuster
“Baby teeth do not matter because they fall out anyway.”
What’s true
Baby teeth hold space for adult teeth and help with chewing and clear speech, and the back ones stay until around 10 to 12. Decay in them causes pain and infection and can affect the adult teeth underneath.
Well establishedHow sure is this correction?
Major medical bodies agree on this. Treat it as standard guidance.
This rating is for the correction above, not the myth.
Question of the day
How much should I play with my toddler, and how much alone?
Both matter. Short bursts of play where you follow their lead are powerful for language and connection. Stretches of independent play, with you nearby, build focus and problem-solving. You do not need to entertain them all day; being available and interested counts.
Good news
Childhood vaccines have saved an estimated 154 million lives over the past 50 years, 101 million of them babies.
