Today’s read

A new myth and a new question each day.

Mythbuster

False

“Babies sleep more safely on their side.”

What’s true

On the back, for every sleep, is safest. Babies on their side can easily roll onto their tummy, and side and tummy sleeping both raise the risk of . Healthy babies don't choke on spit-up lying on their backs: their airway protects itself.

Well establishedHow sure is this correction?

Major medical bodies agree on this. Treat it as standard guidance.

This rating is for the correction above, not the myth.

Question of the day

Why is my baby's head a funny shape?

Squeezing through the birth canal often leaves a newborn's head long or cone-shaped, a little lopsided, or with a soft swelling on top. This molding usually rounds out within a few days. A firm lump on one side, often a bruise under the scalp called a cephalohematoma, can take weeks to months to go and can add to jaundice, so mention it at checkups. Babies born by cesarean often have rounder heads from the start.

  • Register the birthDeadlines vary by country, commonly within 42 days. You will need the certificate for benefits and passports.
  • Register the baby with a doctorDo it early so you are not doing it during your first illness at 2am.

Health

  • Check visitors are vaccinatedThe CDC advises visitors to be up to date on Tdap, and to have a flu vaccine in season, at least two weeks before meeting the baby. It is reasonable to ask, and reasonable to say no.
  • Check in on your own mental healthBaby blues settle within two weeks. Anything persisting beyond that is worth raising, for either parent.

Appointments

  • Book the six-to-eight-week checkupsFor both of you. Your own postpartum checkup should cover mood, bleeding, contraception and recovery.
