Today’s read

A new myth and a new question each day.

Mythbuster

False

“Newborns need water as well as milk.”

What’s true

Breast milk or formula gives them all the water they need. Extra water fills a tiny stomach, and too much can upset the balance of salts in their blood. Water can wait until around six months, when solids start.

Well establishedHow sure is this correction?

Major medical bodies agree on this. Treat it as standard guidance.

This rating is for the correction above, not the myth.

Question of the day

Is it normal for my baby to lose weight?

Yes. Most newborns lose some weight in the first few days, mostly fluid, often around 5 to 7 percent of their birth weight. They usually start gaining again by about day five and are back to birth weight by 10 to 14 days. Losing more than about 7 percent is a reason for a feeding check with your baby's doctor or a lactation consultant, and losing 10 percent or more, or not being back to birth weight by two weeks, needs to be seen soon.

  • Register the birthDeadlines vary by country, commonly within 42 days. You will need the certificate for benefits and passports.
  • Register the baby with a doctorDo it early so you are not doing it during your first illness at 2am.

Health

  • Check visitors are vaccinatedThe CDC advises visitors to be up to date on Tdap, and to have a flu vaccine in season, at least two weeks before meeting the baby. It is reasonable to ask, and reasonable to say no.
  • Check in on your own mental healthBaby blues settle within two weeks. Anything persisting beyond that is worth raising, for either parent.

Appointments

  • Book the six-to-eight-week checkupsFor both of you. Your own postpartum checkup should cover mood, bleeding, contraception and recovery.

  • Start vitamin D drops
