Today’s read

A new myth and a new question each day.

Mythbuster

False

“Sunlight through a window will treat jaundice.”

What’s true

The advises against using sunlight to treat jaundice: it doesn't work reliably, and it risks sunburn and overheating. If your baby looks yellow, let their doctor check the level; if treatment is needed, it's with special lights (phototherapy).

Well establishedHow sure is this correction?

Major medical bodies agree on this. Treat it as standard guidance.

This rating is for the correction above, not the myth.

Question of the day

How many wet and dirty diapers should there be?

A rough guide for the first days is at least one wet diaper per day of life: one on day one, two on day two, and so on. By day five or six, expect six or more wet diapers a day and, for breastfed babies, at least three or four yellow poops. Formula-fed babies may poop less often. After the first few days, fewer wet diapers, dark yellow pee, orange or pink crystals in the diaper, or a dry mouth are reasons to call.

  • Register the birthDeadlines vary by country, commonly within 42 days. You will need the certificate for benefits and passports.
  • Register the baby with a doctorDo it early so you are not doing it during your first illness at 2am.

Health

  • Check visitors are vaccinatedThe CDC advises visitors to be up to date on Tdap, and to have a flu vaccine in season, at least two weeks before meeting the baby. It is reasonable to ask, and reasonable to say no.
  • Check in on your own mental healthBaby blues settle within two weeks. Anything persisting beyond that is worth raising, for either parent.

Appointments

  • Book the six-to-eight-week checkupsFor both of you. Your own postpartum checkup should cover mood, bleeding, contraception and recovery.
