Today’s read

A new myth and a new question each day.

Mythbuster

False

“Crib bumpers keep a baby safe.”

What’s true

Bumpers aren't safe: babies have suffocated or been trapped against them. The advises against them, and padded crib bumpers can no longer be sold in the US. The safest crib has a firm mattress, a fitted sheet, and nothing else.

Well establishedHow sure is this correction?

Major medical bodies agree on this. Treat it as standard guidance.

This rating is for the correction above, not the myth.

Question of the day

My baby pauses between breaths. Is that normal?

Newborns often breathe irregularly: a few quick breaths, then a pause of up to about 10 seconds, then normal again. This periodic breathing is common, especially in sleep, and settles over the first months. Call 911 if they stop breathing for 20 seconds or longer, or a pause comes with blue or gray lips or face or a floppy baby. Breathing that looks like hard work, with grunting, flaring nostrils or the skin pulling in between the ribs, needs a same-day call.

  • Register the birthDeadlines vary by country, commonly within 42 days. You will need the certificate for benefits and passports.
  • Register the baby with a doctorDo it early so you are not doing it during your first illness at 2am.

Health

  • Check visitors are vaccinatedThe CDC advises visitors to be up to date on Tdap, and to have a flu vaccine in season, at least two weeks before meeting the baby. It is reasonable to ask, and reasonable to say no.
  • Check in on your own mental healthBaby blues settle within two weeks. Anything persisting beyond that is worth raising, for either parent.

Appointments

  • Book the six-to-eight-week checkupsFor both of you. Your own postpartum checkup should cover mood, bleeding, contraception and recovery.
Completed (1)
  • Start vitamin D drops
