Today’s read

A new myth and a new question each day.

Mythbuster

False

“A pacifier will ruin breastfeeding if you offer one at all.”

What’s true

It's a question of timing. The suggests waiting until breastfeeding is going well, often around three to four weeks, before offering one. After that, a pacifier at sleep times is fine and is linked with a lower risk of . Bottle-fed babies can have one from the start.

Well establishedHow sure is this correction?

Major medical bodies agree on this. Treat it as standard guidance.

This rating is for the correction above, not the myth.

Question of the day

Why is my baby suddenly feeding more?

Many babies have growth spurts around two to three weeks, six weeks and three months. For a day or two they want to feed much more often and may be fussier. If you're breastfeeding, it doesn't mean your milk is running low: feeding more often is how supply catches up. With formula, follow their hunger cues, since they may want a little more for a few days. If wet diapers and weight gain are on track, it settles on its own.

  • Register the birthDeadlines vary by country, commonly within 42 days. You will need the certificate for benefits and passports.
  • Register the baby with a doctorDo it early so you are not doing it during your first illness at 2am.

Health

  • Check visitors are vaccinatedThe CDC advises visitors to be up to date on Tdap, and to have a flu vaccine in season, at least two weeks before meeting the baby. It is reasonable to ask, and reasonable to say no.
  • Check in on your own mental healthBaby blues settle within two weeks. Anything persisting beyond that is worth raising, for either parent.

Appointments

  • Book the six-to-eight-week checkupsFor both of you. Your own postpartum checkup should cover mood, bleeding, contraception and recovery.
