Allergens

The nine common food allergens. Tap one when Juniper tries it.

How to introduce them

The AAP says most babies can try egg, peanut, dairy and sesame around 6 months, along with other solids, after a few first foods have gone well. Waiting doesn't prevent allergies. Before 12 months: no cow's milk as a drink, and no honey (it can cause infant botulism).

Severe eczema, or an egg allergy already? NIAID suggests peanut foods as early as 4 to 6 months, but talk to your baby's doctor first: they may suggest a test or a first taste in the office.

Once a food goes well, keep it coming: at least once a week, say the allergy societies of Australia (ASCIA) and Canada (CSACI), and the AAP says to keep it in your baby's diet routinely. For babies at higher risk, NIAID suggests about 6 to 7 grams of peanut protein a week, over 3 or more feedings.

For how long? There's no agreed age to stop. Canadian allergists (CSACI) say about 5 years appears to be enough for peanut, and other foods may need the same; how long matters beyond that isn't known. So think of them as everyday foods to keep on the menu, not a list to finish.

Start with a small taste, at home, earlier in the day, so you can watch for a couple of hours.

Signs of a reaction

A rash, vomiting or diarrhea after a new food: stop offering it and talk to your pediatrician before trying it again.

Call 911 if, especially soon after eating, there's trouble breathing, wheezing, repeated coughing or trouble swallowing, swollen lips or tongue, widespread hives, pale or bluish skin, repeated vomiting, unusual sleepiness, dizziness or fainting. If your child has prescribed epinephrine, use it right away, note the time, and call 911 for an ambulance; the AAP says a second dose may be needed if symptoms get worse or don't improve in 5 minutes.

General information from the AAP and NIAID, not a diagnosis. Your doctor knows your child best.

Today’s read

A new myth and a new question each day.

Mythbuster

False

“Every child should be potty trained by two.”

What’s true

In the US, most children start between two and three, and finish at very different ages. Readiness signs, such as staying dry for two hours and noticing when they need to go, matter far more than age.

Well establishedHow sure is this correction?

Major medical bodies agree on this. Treat it as standard guidance.

This rating is for the correction above, not the myth.

Question of the day

Can I leave my toddler alone with the dog?

No, even with a gentle family dog. Most bites to young children come from a dog they know, and are often to the face. Supervise every interaction, teach them not to hug, grab or disturb a dog that is eating or sleeping, and give the dog a place to retreat.

Health

  • Flu shot this seasonThe American Academy of Pediatrics recommends it every fall for everyone from 6 months. Children getting it for the first time need two doses, at least four weeks apart.

Safety

  • Stay rear-facing until the seat's limitTurn the seat forward only once they reach the highest rear-facing height or weight the seat allows. For many convertible seats that's well past age 2. Bent legs are fine.

Sleep

  • Move to a toddler bed when readyUsually when they start climbing out of the crib. There's no prize for going early. Keep the routine the same and gate the doorway or stairs.

Big steps

  • Watch for signs of potty readinessStaying dry for a couple of hours, telling you about a wet or dirty diaper, interest in the toilet. Many children are ready between 2 and 3. Waiting for the signs usually makes it quicker.
  • Look into daycare and preschool optionsVisit a few, ask about ratios, staff turnover and how they handle behavior. Good places often have waiting lists.
  • Apply for preschoolApplications are often due up to a year before the start date. Check deadlines, and whether your state offers free pre-K.
