Today’s read

A new myth and a new question each day.

Mythbuster

False

“Warming a bottle in the microwave is fine if you shake it.”

What’s true

Microwaves heat unevenly and can leave hot spots that scald a baby's mouth, even after shaking. Warm a bottle in a bowl of warm water or a bottle warmer instead, and test a few drops on your wrist. Babies are also happy with room-temperature milk.

Well establishedHow sure is this correction?

Major medical bodies agree on this. Treat it as standard guidance.

This rating is for the correction above, not the myth.

Question of the day

Why does evening feeding feel like it never ends?

Many newborns bunch feeds close together in the late afternoon and evening, called cluster feeding. It's a normal pattern, not a sign you're running out of milk, and it often eases after a few weeks. Offer the breast or bottle, keep them close, and judge how they're doing by diapers and weight gain rather than by how the evening feels.

  • Register the birthDeadlines vary by country, commonly within 42 days. You will need the certificate for benefits and passports.
  • Register the baby with a doctorDo it early so you are not doing it during your first illness at 2am.

Health

  • Check visitors are vaccinatedThe CDC advises visitors to be up to date on Tdap, and to have a flu vaccine in season, at least two weeks before meeting the baby. It is reasonable to ask, and reasonable to say no.
  • Check in on your own mental healthBaby blues settle within two weeks. Anything persisting beyond that is worth raising, for either parent.

Appointments

  • Book the six-to-eight-week checkupsFor both of you. Your own postpartum checkup should cover mood, bleeding, contraception and recovery.
Completed (1)
  • Start vitamin D drops
