Today’s read

A new myth and a new question each day.

Mythbuster

False

“If you're breastfeeding, you have to give up coffee.”

What’s true

A moderate amount is generally fine. The says up to about 300 mg of caffeine a day, roughly two to three cups of coffee, isn't typically harmful to breastfed babies. If your baby seems unusually fussy or wakeful, try cutting back, especially if they were born early.

Well establishedHow sure is this correction?

Major medical bodies agree on this. Treat it as standard guidance.

This rating is for the correction above, not the myth.

Question of the day

Is it the baby blues, or something more?

Most new mothers (or parents who gave birth) have the baby blues: tearfulness, mood swings and feeling overwhelmed in the first days, usually easing by two weeks. If low mood, anxiety, or not enjoying anything lasts longer than two weeks or gets worse, it may be postpartum depression or anxiety, which are common and treatable, and partners can have it too. Tell your doctor or midwife. In the US, the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline (1-833-852-6262) is free and open 24/7. If you have thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, call 911 now.

  • Register the birthDeadlines vary by country, commonly within 42 days. You will need the certificate for benefits and passports.
  • Register the baby with a doctorDo it early so you are not doing it during your first illness at 2am.

Health

  • Check visitors are vaccinatedThe CDC advises visitors to be up to date on Tdap, and to have a flu vaccine in season, at least two weeks before meeting the baby. It is reasonable to ask, and reasonable to say no.
  • Check in on your own mental healthBaby blues settle within two weeks. Anything persisting beyond that is worth raising, for either parent.

Appointments

  • Book the six-to-eight-week checkupsFor both of you. Your own postpartum checkup should cover mood, bleeding, contraception and recovery.
